The Spirit of Reconciliation

The Spirit of Reconciliation, a new, feature length documentary (65 minutes)

How do we reconcile with people when we go through so much pain, trouble and suffering? This is a very real question faced by Aboriginal people in our nation, not just because of racism, but also resulting from trouble within their own families and communities. Who better to listen to for how we can learn to live with a Spirit of Reconciliation?

Discover powerful, moving, real-life reconciliation stories from Aboriginal Australian elders and communities, exploring how forgiveness can heal families, friendships, and even entire communities after conflict, trauma and deep division. This film follows moving testimonies of tribal disputes, broken family relationships, cultural peacemaking traditions and moments of spiritual awakening that point toward the need for unity and restoration, and ways to do so. You will hear about ancient practices, and the meaning of Makarrata - a traditional pathway to settling conflict and making peace.

Through moving stories of family breakdown, community violence, racism, grief and healing, the film reveals how reconciliation begins with humility, listening and letting go of bitterness. It also explores powerful nature metaphors: fire, water, and wind, as symbols of cleansing, renewal, and transformation. Appealing for the spiritually curious and people of faith alike, this film speaks to all who are searching for meaning, healing and hope.

If you’re interested in reconciliation in Australia, Aboriginal culture, forgiveness, healing from trauma and restoring relationships, this film offers a raw, moving and inspiring perspective.

Featuring stunning locations in several remote communities across Australia’s Northern Territory, such as Milingimbi Island (Yurruwi) in Arnhem Land, and Daly River (Naiyu). The Spirit of Reconciliation is a feature length documentary, produced over 1 year, taking us into the hearts, lives and communities of 14 Aboriginal elders and leaders from 8 communities. This film is their stories of reconciliation.

We would love you to share this documentary with those you know.

The film is free to watch and share, in order to make it as accessible as possible to all. (Creative Commons License: CC BY-NC-ND).
